Traditional Style Decorating
Traditional Style Decorating is by definition "A Classic". This Style has been in existence in one form or another for Centuries. However, Traditional Interior Design looked very different in the 1950's than it does today. The types of Wood, Colors and Textures change with
Interior Decorating Trends
even though the overall look stays somewhat the same. Today's rendition of Traditional Style Interiors retain the darker woods and classic lines but are far less formal and have fewer carved details than Traditional Designs of yesteryear. When planning a Design for a Traditional Style Space try determining a "Focal Point" in the room. Maybe it is a beautiful fireplace. Perhaps you have a wonderful painting or you are fortunate enough to live in an area that has a wonderful view. This "Focal Point" can be the basis for a successful Design. Plan your furnishings sensitively around this feature. Do not be afraid to "float" pieces of furniture into the middle of the room. In other words try not to push everything up against the walls! If you need assistance with this refer to
The Interior Decorating Guide.
Next seriously consider adding some Rich Fabrics and Textures to your Design. I always recommend a palette of at least three different fabrics. Find one beautiful classic pattern with a larger print. Add an accent fabric that has a small to medium size print or texture and use a solid to pull it all together. If you are nervous about using larger prints experiment by using these on accent chairs or pillows. Traditional Interior Design can come to life by adding a rich Color Scheme. Once you have chosen your fabric pick your paint colors. Yes, I mean pick your paint colors last!!! Refer to
Interior Decorating Color Schemes
for more information about the importance of choosing the right colors for your Design. Once you have decided on the furniture, how you will lay out the area, picked your fabrics and chosen your Color Schemes you are ready to put some final touches on your new Design. Lighting and Accessories will make your room come to Life!!! Never underestimate the importance of these elements. Have at least three to four sources of lighting that will be multi-functional. I recommend the use of floor and table lamps over recessed or track lighting in a Traditional Interior. Accessories can be used freely but try not clutter every area of the room. "Everything in Moderation" is an Old Motto that will make your Traditional Style Decorating project a "Classic" for years to come!!!
