Living Room Interior Design

Living Room Interior Design is an evolving aspect of Interior Design and Decorating. One of the biggest trends we see are less Formal Living Areas that are being replaced with Family or Great Rooms.

This is due in large part to how much our lives have changed over the past 50 years. Entertaining has taken on a much more casual "Family Style" feel. Most people today that still have Formal Living Rooms only use this area for Holidays. As a result we see people many foregoing their Formal Living areas for much more family friendly, casual spaces.

So how do make a Casual Living Area Beautiful as well as Functional? As always with Interior Design - Good Planning! Take the time to come up with an Overall Design. I suggest you visit The Interior Decorating Guide for step by step instructions on how to successfully complete your next Design Project but here are some important tips to keep in mind:

  • Living Rooms today should have ample seating that is both comfortable, versatile, and functional. The space should feel roomy not crowded.
  • Opt for a leather sofa that has an attached or semi-attached back so when the kids get crazy you are not constantly fixing the cushions.
  • Think about using small ottomans tucked under a sofa table for extra guest seating or having a high bistro table with stools in the area for casual dining.
  • Consider having some beautifully made floor cushions so you can flop on the carpet with the kids and the dog but stack them up neatly in the corner when guests arrive (unless they enjoy sitting on the floor as well)!!
  • Invest in end tables that have glass, tile, slate or granite tops so you don't have to worry about stains from coffee cups or wine glasses.
  • Lighting is the "Master of Mood". Combine overhead track or recessed lighting with table and floor lamps. Invest a dimmer system in your Living Space. This is great way to create versatility that can accommodate family activities, as well as evening entertaining.
  • If you have a television in the space consider mounting the screen on the wall if your home is more Modern or find an attractive credenza to place your TV if your home has a more Traditional feel.
  • Think about having concealed storage in your Living room. This could be an ottoman that doubles as a trunk, bookcases with doors on the bottom or even end tables that have storage. When company is coming you have a place to stash the toys, remotes, magazines, etc.
Living Room Interior Design projects today clearly have to afford a home owner the ability to create a space that will not only be functional and versatile but also beautiful and easy to keep organized. Living Rooms today are truly for Enjoying not just Admiring!
