Green Design
Many people today are interested in utilizing Green Design in their homes or offices but are confused about where to begin. There are simple and effective ways to make your next design project beautiful and eco-friendly. By now we all know that we should be replacing our incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescents, buying energy efficient appliances and using water saving toilets. But how can you make your next decorating project Earth Friendly? First of all lets define Green Design. Environmentally conscious design is also referred to as Eco Friendly or Sustainable Design.
Green Design is creating environmentally safe spaces that are non-toxic to humans and pets. This can be accomplished by using paints, coatings, sealants and cleaners that have low or no VOC's (volatile organic compounds). When buying new flooring or carpet ask for products that are certified to have low "off gas". This is the volatile odor that is emitted by toxic chemicals used in most flooring materials. Products with low toxicity levels ensure that you will be creating Healthy Design for you, your family and the environment.
Using renewable materials is another important aspect of eco-friendly design. Examples of renewable products include bamboo or soy based products, cork flooring and hemp fabric. These types of items can be easily re-grown and are referred to as "sustainable". The use of renewable products limit the negative impact on the environment by creating less waste and using less energy to produce. Ultimately this will conserve our precious natural resources.
Using products that are recycled is yet another important aspect of environmentally conscious design. A great way to incorporate this into your next project is simply to think about reusing some of your existing furniture. Maybe you have a great night stand that is currently in your bedroom but with a good sanding and coat of non-toxic paint or stain it becomes a new end table in your living room. You can accomplish the same thing by shopping at your local antique store, salvation army or weekend garage sale. Just think about it...you are saving money and the environment at the same time by using Creative Recycling...gotta love it!!!
When buying new items for your next design project always try to purchase the best quality you can afford. If you make an investment in something that is well built and classically designed the item will last longer and will not need to be replaced as often. Simply put you are investing in quality NOT planned obsolescence. This is also environmentally conscious because it cuts down on waste and has less impact on our land fills.
As you can see Green Design is not a complicated or expensive process, but rather a valuable and rewarding aspect of interior design. It can (and should) be incorporated into every decorating project. Just think you will not only be creating a beautiful space but you will also be doing your part to conserve natural resources and help save our precious environment. Remember, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Design Responsibly!
