Fabric Selection for Interior Design
Fabric Selection can be the first important step in developing a good Color Scheme. Always choose the fabric that you will use for Window Treatments, Accent Pillows, Ottomans, etc. before you choose your paint color. This is one of the best pieces of advice I can offer as an Interior Designer. If you need help developing an entire design for your home or office please go to the
Interior Decorating Guide
for step by step instructions on your next decorating project!
First look at the space where you will be selecting fabric. Do you already have some pieces that will be included in the design? For example say you have a wonderful camel colored leather lounge chair and a sage green sofa. Look for a fabric that will unite these pieces. This fabric can be used for window coverings, pillows and a small accent chair. Search for a patterned fabric that will have a third predominant color such as russet red with camel brown and sage green accents. When this russet red fabric with gold and green accents is combined with the existing pieces the space will appear unified and have a "Custom Look". The key to successfully selecting fabrics is to develop a palette with a minimum of three colors; in this case the "Color Triad" is camel brown, sage green and russet red. Ultimately one of the fabrics should have a pattern with touches of all the colors in your chosen color palette. The use of three fabric colors in a space provides depth and visual interest and makes choosing your paint colors a breeze! Please go to
