Careers in Interior Design

Careers in Interior Design can be both exciting and rewarding. If you are prepared to make the commitment to get the education and experience you will need as a Professional Interior Designer you can enjoy a wonderfully rewarding career. There are some things that you should consider to ensure that your career is rewarding.

When you enter design school you will be getting an Education in Interior Design basics. While in school I recommend talking to as many experienced professionals in the field as possible. This can help you decide if you want to specialize in Residential or Commercial (Contract) Design.

Maybe you would like to Specialize in Health Care Design? Perhaps you would like Hospitality Design which includes, Hotels, Resorts and Restaurants. There are also sub-specialties like Institutional and Theater Design. All of these areas of are some of the fastest growing in the industry.

It is worthwhile to think about the type of design you might enjoy so you can research firms that you might like to approach for future employment. Before you get out of school it is worthwhile to investigate Summer Internships at potential Interior Design Firms. This can give you a true feel for the culture of a particular firm and possibly give you a "foot" in the proverbial door once you graduate.

If you are already in the field and are looking to make a change START NETWORKING! I can't stress this enough! Speak to every Architect, Engineer and Interior Designer you know! A great group to network with is ASID (American Society of Interior Designers). One of the most valuable things you can gain from membership is the networking opportunities when you are looking for a new position.

Although posting a resume can work for some the best Careers in Interior Design usually come from meeting and networking with others. Obviously you have to have good skill and creativity but never underestimate the power of "Who you Know" to land the Interior Design Job that you have dreamed of having! Best of Luck!
