Interior Paint Color Schemes

Do you need some help choosing a Interior Paint Color Schemes for your Home? Fear not..this process is a lot easier than you think. Here are some easy steps to follow and some Color Scheme suggestions that will have you enjoying your new Interior in no time at all!!!

First of all always decide exactly what furnishings will be in the room before selecting any Paint Colors. Never choose your paint color first. Lets go through the following example:

  • You have just rearranged your Living Room which will now have a new chocolate brown leather sofa
  • An arm chair that has terracotta and light blue woven fabric with two accent pillows
  • A side chair that has a solid terracotta fabric
  • A couple of wood side tables...and
  • An area rug that is Beige with Chocolate brown, Terracotta and Light Blue accents

Now think about what colors in the room you can use to develop a Color Scheme.

  • Chocolate Brown
  • Terracotta
  • Light Blue
  • Beige

It is usually a good idea to paint the walls in this area the least predominant color in your furniture scheme; in this case it would be Light Blue. This creates an interesting color contrast especially when the surrounding rooms are painted the remaining colors.

For instance paint your kitchen a medium tone terracotta, your dining area a deep chocolate brown and the transitional areas such as entry ways and hallways a rich beige.

The easiest way to choose the right colors is to bring an accent pillow or a piece of fabric from this area to a local paint store and start to pull paint chips that blend with colors in the fabric.

Take at least three of the each paint chip that you select. Bring the chips home and tape the colors on the wall in the room you will be painting.

Once you decide on the appropriate color you may want to consider buying a sample of the paint and apply a 3'-0" x 3'-0" section either directly on the wall or on poster board.

The key is to look at the paint in the room with the furniture (if possible) before you put a brush in a paint can!!!

You should do this test when you can see the paint in the morning, afternoon and evening. Colors change drastically in different light.

This is the way Professional Interior Designers create Color Schemes for our clients. Ultimately this process helps to avoid costly mistakes. Other Color Schemes that are popular today include:

  • Soft gold, medium terracotta and dark chocolate brown
  • Soft wheat, light blue green and chocolate brown
  • Soft ivory, medium sage green and dark charcoal grey

Some of the newest more modern color trends we are starting to see may sound a bit daring but when done correctly can really be very stylish...

  • Rich ivory, medium pumpkin and dark slate grey
  • Oyster white, bright orange or pink and chocolate brown
  • Stark white with bright green and yellow
  • Stark white with bright pink and orange
